L-Carnitine Supplements
What is L-Carnitine?
L-carnitine is an amino acid produced by lysine and methionone in the body, however is also found in food. It plays a role in the metabolism of fats by helping the body convert fatty acids into energy, and it is also involved in muscle movement and the production of energy in the cells.
L-carnitine and its many forms maybe useful in liver diseases, depression, metabolic health, and potentially many other conditions. Some people take L-carnitine supplements to improve athletic performance or to support weight loss. Although many take L-carnitine for fat-loss, the effectiveness is questionable, and still needs to be studied.
What is Actyl-L-Carnitine?
Acetyl-L-carnitine is the bioligically active form of L-carnitine, which is an amino acid that plays a role in the metabolism of fats. It is thought to be more easily absorbed by the body than L-carnitine, and it is sometimes used as a dietary supplement. Acetyl-L-carnitine is thought to have some potential health benefits, such as increased energy and improved athletic performance. It is also sometimes used to support brain function and memory, although more research is needed to determine its effectiveness for these uses.
Acetyl-L-carnitine is found in small amounts in some foods, including red meat and dairy products, but it can also be taken as a dietary supplement.
Some Key Benefits Seen By Studies Conducted with L-Carnitine
Based on research by examine.com, 3 studies showed a noteable decrease is C-Reactive Protein. There were also a few studies that suggested a slight decrease is blood glucose and interleukin 6. This could be positive to people looking to decrease inflammation, improve blood sugar levels (potentially even support weight loss) or impacting autoimmune conditions. Still more research is needed... but interesting to say the least.
There also seems to be research suggesting benefits associated with cognitive decline in older individuals and even support to those suffering with ADHD, however more studies are still needed.
What Foods Contain Carnitine?
Carnitine is found in a variety of foods, including red meat, poultry, and fish. Some other sources of carnitine include dairy products, such as milk and yogurt, as well as some plant-based foods, like avocados and peanuts.
Who is Likely to be Carnitine Deficient?
Carnitine deficiency is relatively rare and is typically only seen in people with certain underlying medical conditions or who are taking certain medications. For example, people with certain genetic disorders, such as inherited disorders of fatty acid metabolism, may be at risk for carnitine deficiency. Additionally, people who have had part of their small intestine surgically removed or who have certain types of liver disease may also be at risk.
However, vegans and vegetarians may intake lower levels of Carnitine, and it may be wise to supplement to help bring levels up.
